Keynote Speakers & Panel Proceedings

Session 01

Building Phage Infrastructure in Low-Income Countries

Dr. Tobi Nagel presented on Phages for Global Health, highlighting that 90 percent of the 10 million annual deaths from antimicrobial resistance are expected in Africa and Asia. Dr. Tobi Nagel detailed capacity-building training workshops held since 2017 in Uganda, Kenya, West Africa, and Tanzania, which trained roughly 100 scientists who subsequently trained 1,200 others, started over 50 projects, raised over 2 million dollars, and isolated 600 phages.

Session 02

High-Performance Genome Annotation for a Safer and Faster-Developing Phage Therapy

High-Performance Genome Annotations for Phage Therapy: Antoine Culot, co-founder of RIME Bioinformatics, presented on high-performance genome annotations designed to accelerate and secure phage therapy development. Antoine Culot explained that their startup developed custom tools that outperform the standard Phage manual protocol by identifying an average of 7 additional annotated genes per phage genome while minimizing gaps and hypothetical protein uncertainties.

Session 03

Bacteriophage products to be used in Clinical trials and for compassionate use purposes

Phage Manufacturing Capabilities and Clinical Trial Material: Frenk Smrekar, CEO of JAFRAL BioSolutions and vice president of Phage Europe, presented on bacteriophage products for clinical trials.

Session 04

Phage-Mediated Antivirulence

Phage-Mediated Antivirulence Philosophy: Salsabil Ibrahim Mohamed presented on phage-mediated antivirulence, framing it as an alternative to traditional antimicrobials to combat antimicrobial resistance challenges projected by 2050.
